Former World Equestrian Games Official Named As Interim Executive Director

LEXINGTON – The Bluegrass Sports Commission (BSC) today announced Terry Johnson as its new Interim Executive Director. Johnson will be responsible for all aspects of the organization, which include leading the efforts of the 2011 Bluegrass State Games, the annual Central Kentucky event that generates more than $6 million in economic impact to the area each summer.

“We are excited to name Terry to this post,” said BSC Chairman Alan Stein. “The Commission has taken great strides since its inception and I am confident his background and abilities will allow us to continue that growth.”

Johnson most recently served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Prior to his role with the 2010 Games, Johnson served as the first-ever Executive Director of the Kentucky Sports Authority in Frankfort, the agency responsible for working with Kentucky communities to attract events to the Commonwealth. Prior to that, he spent more than 12 years in collegiate sports marketing in various roles at the BIG EAST Conference, the University of Kentucky, Morehead State and HOST Communications.

“I am truly excited to accept this position,” said Johnson. “I’ve spent my career in sports and know first-hand the economic impact events can have on communities. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead our efforts in Central Kentucky.”

Johnson received his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University in 1991 and a masters degree from the University of Kentucky in 1994. He and his wife Cindy reside in Lexington and have two children, Matthew (10) and Drew (7).
